oncrete can wear many faces. In the wrong hands it goes cold and clinical, the stuff of a thousand Brutalist eyesores. But when made with skill, it becomes something else entirely, imbued with a tactile allure that's well suited for residential projects. This allure is largely responsible for the quiet, contemplative power of Phoenix House. In a seaside town some 25 miles north of San Diego, architect Sebastian Mariscal formed a structure of richly textured concrete that employs adroit massing, a carefully considered floor plan, and a diverse collection of outdoor spaces in a design that eschews grandiosity for intimacy.

Madrid-based architect Alberto Campo Baeza has created the new headquarters for the Castilla León region's government, located in the ancient heart of the city facing Zamora's old cathedral. The design offers a successful mix of glass minimalism and smart site-location strategy. Like a Babushka doll the building's first layer is an enclosing stone wall, then a garden of air and finally a completely transparent glass house.

Every evening, as the stars swirl across the sky over the seaside city of Baku, one glimmering structure seems to hover just above the Earth's horizon on a platform of light: the luminous curves, soaring arcs and flowing geometry of the Heydar Aliyev Center, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, in the capital of Azerbaijan instantly identify this as one of the globe's newest icons of advanced experimental architecture.

Spacious Ribbon House Shape Architectural Design by G2 Estudio

 

A house built on a land area of 396 square meters located in San Carlos de Bariloche, Rio Negro, Argentinean Patagonia and designed by Estudio G2. The concept and initial idea of making this house is making the house that every room has a different function, or what is made and designed in each space should be used in accordance with its function. Geometry settings in the building and each room is expected to generate a dynamic route between the activity of the resting place so that the transition between the room can be aligned and matched. With strong materials and sturdy construction, so the living space is a search the between the balance, juxtaposition, ribbon, viewing-point, a vital tour and hug.

 A deep, sloping plot overlooking Los Angeles is home to a new contemporary home with a twist.  Instead of a garage at the base level and private sections above, the Car Park House by Anonymous Architects flips that concept on its head.  The driveway approaches the home from above and extends over its living section with a garage on its roof.  A staircase brings the home’s occupants below where family rooms, bedrooms and balconies provide private living spaces.

Unlike most exclusive contemporary homes, this one is built to be shared.  The Black Desert House by Marc Atlan Design and Oller & Pejic Architects is a “commercial residence”, in that it is a 3-bedroom house that is built for rental by film, photography and commercial production companies.  Located in the desert of Joshua Tree, California, The Black Desert House provides a private view of some of the most picturesque natural landscapes in Southern California.
